How Rockwool Products Fail – and How We Fix Them

Rockwool makes good insulation. Stone wool batts and boards hold their R-value well in San Diego’s coastal humidity, which is more than we can say for some fiberglass we’ve pulled out of attics in Clairemont and La Jolla. But when Rockwool and spray foam meet in the same cavity or attic assembly, specific failure patterns show up. Here are the five we see most often across San Diego and what we do about each one.

  • Rockwool Comfortbatt compressed by spray foam expansion. Closed-cell foam expands with real force. When someone sprays closed-cell directly against Comfortbatt batts in a knee wall or vaulted ceiling, the foam crushes the batt down to half its rated thickness. R-15 becomes R-7 in places you can’t see. We find this on older remodels in North Park and South Park where a previous crew mixed materials without thinking about expansion pressure. The fix is pulling the compressed batt, framing the cavity to spec, and either re-insulating with properly fitted Rockwool or switching the cavity to open-cell foam that doesn’t exert the same force.
  • Rockwool Safe’n’Sound and open-cell foam trapping moisture in bathroom ceilings. Safe’n’Sound is a sound-control product, not a vapor barrier. San Diego coastal homes get real humidity, especially in Mission Beach and Pacific Beach. When open-cell foam is sprayed over or under Safe’n’Sound in a bathroom ceiling without proper venting, the assembly holds moisture. We’ve opened ceilings where the Rockwool looked wet but nobody had a roof leak. The fix is usually a ventilation correction plus replacing the affected Rockwool, then reassessing whether that cavity should have open-cell at all.
  • Rockwool Comfortboard 80 cracking at the seams during spray foam retrofits. Comfortboard 80 is rigid mineral wool board used for exterior continuous insulation. In San Diego’s sun, particularly in inland spots like El Cajon and Santee where attics hit 140 degrees in August, the boards expand and contract. When spray foam is added inside the wall and the assembly gets tighter and hotter, those seams crack. It looks like a structural problem but it’s thermal movement. We address it by checking the board’s attachment pattern, correcting any missing fasteners, and then deciding with you whether to seal the seams mechanically before any foam goes in. It’s a sequence issue, and it’s preventable.
  • Rockwool AFB evo tucked too tightly around rim joists, starving the spray foam of a bond surface. AFB evo is a flexible batt product people sometimes stuff into rim-joist bays before realizing they want spray foam instead. The problem: foam won’t bond to a dusty, fibrous surface that’s shoved tight against the subfloor. We get called to homes in Chula Vista and National City where foam has delaminated from a rim-joist cavity because someone tried to spray over loose Rockwool instead of removing it first. Our fix is pulling the Rockwool out of the bay, prepping the surfaces, and applying closed-cell foam directly to clean wood. The Rockwool can go back inboard of the foam or be replaced entirely depending on your assembly.
  • Rockwool RainScreen board and spray foam roof decks creating a double vapor retarder in marine-layer zones. Point Loma and Ocean Beach sit in the marine layer for weeks at a time. RainScreen boards are dense and moisture-resistant on their own. Pair them with closed-cell spray foam on a roof deck and you get a double vapor retarder sandwich. Add a cool, foggy night and you have condensation where you don’t want it: at the sheathing. We flag this on nearly every coastal roof-deck inspection we do. The fix involves either an intelligent vapor retarder on the interior side or switching the foam to open-cell in certain assemblies. This is a judgment call based on your exact roofline, and it’s why we walk every attic before recommending anything.

Our Rockwool Spray Foam Insulation Process

Good insulation shouldn’t be a mystery – it should just work, and you should understand why. That’s how Glenn Hartley runs every Rockwool spray foam job in San Diego, and the process is the same whether we’re working on a garage ceiling in Mira Mesa or a full attic in Encinitas.

  1. 1
You call (619) 344-8538. A live person answers. We talk through what you’re seeing: drafts, hot rooms, noise, a previous foam job that failed. If it sounds like a Rockwool and spray foam issue, we book a diagnostic visit.
  2. 2
We inspect the assembly. We look at the Rockwool product, the foam, the framing, the venting, and the moisture situation. We check which Rockwool line you have – Comfortbatt, Safe’n’Sound, AFB evo, Comfortboard – because the fix changes depending on the product.
  3. 3
You get a written price before any work starts. No door-step surprises. We tell you exactly what we’ll do, what materials we’ll use, and what it costs. You sign off on the number before a single tool comes off the truck.
  4. 4
We do the work clean. We pull what needs pulling, prep the surfaces, and apply the foam or install the Rockwool properly. We only use OEM Rockwool products when the project warrants it, and we use quality aftermarket materials when they meet or exceed spec for less money. We tell you which we recommend and why.
  5. 5
We test and walk you through it. After the job, we check the assembly, verify the foam cured properly, and show you what we did. We explain it in plain language so you know what you paid for.
  6. 6
We put the guarantee in writing. Every job includes the Kingswell Guarantee: 365 days, in writing, included on every job. If it’s not right within a year, we come back and fix it at no charge. No fine print, no phone tag.

What Rockwool Spray Foam Insulation Costs in San Diego

Here’s what we see in San Diego and across the county, based on the Rockwool and spray foam jobs we complete most often. These are ranges, not quotes. You get an exact written number before any work starts.

  • Garage ceiling with Rockwool Comfortbatt replacement plus open-cell spray foam: $2,400 to $4,800 depending on square footage, access, and whether old insulation needs removal. Single-car garages land at the low end; detached two-car garages with vaulted ceilings run higher.
  • Rim joist spray foam with Rockwool AFB evo removal and replacement: $1,800 to $3,600. Crawlspace access and the number of bays drive most of the variance. We do plenty of these in East County where crawlspaces are common.
  • Full attic open-cell spray foam on a Rockwool-insulated home, including Rockwool removal: $6,500 to $13,000. Attic size is the big variable, but so is the condition of the Rockwool we’re removing and whether there’s any moisture remediation needed.
  • Closed-cell spray foam roof deck with Rockwool Comfortboard exterior correction: $9,000 to $19,000. This is the most expensive Rockwool-and-foam scenario because it involves both interior foam and exterior board work. Coastal homes in La Jolla and Del Mar with cathedral ceilings land at the top of this range.

What moves the price most: square footage, access difficulty, the specific Rockwool line involved, and whether we’re removing failed foam or failed rockwool first. Every estimate is free, and every price is in writing before work starts. Call (619) 344-8538 for an exact quote.

Why San Diego Homeowners Call Woolsey Insulation San Diego for Rockwool Work

We’re an independently owned and operated insulation company, part of the Kingswell family since 2002, and we do two things: attic insulation and spray foam insulation. We don’t do HVAC, roofing, or windows, which means we don’t have a reason to sell you something you don’t need. We work with eight leading insulation brands – Owens Corning, Johns Manville, Knauf, Rockwool, CertainTeed, Icynene, Demilec, and GreenFiber – plus Reflectix for the occasional radiant barrier application. That matters on a Rockwool job because if the right answer isn’t more Rockwool, we’ll tell you. Our techs are background-checked and uniformed, so you know exactly who’s in your home, and since we’re Rockwool specialists in the field, we know the product lines well enough to name the specific fix, not just sell you a generic re-spray. The call gets answered by a person, every time, day or night.
