Knauf Attic Insulation: The San Diego Owner’s Guide
We stock and install Knauf attic insulation throughout San Diego, with most full-attic installations running between $1,800 and $4,200 depending on square footage and the R-value your home needs. If your existing Knauf insulation has settled, gotten wet, or been torn up by rodents, we can typically match the product and get a crew out within 48 hours. Most San Diego homeowners discover the problem the same way: a bedroom that runs 10 degrees hotter than the rest of the house in August, an energy bill that keeps climbing, or a pest inspection that flags the attic.
Which Knauf Models This Applies To
Knauf makes three main attic insulation lines you’ll find in San Diego homes: EcoBatt (fiberglass batts), Jet Stream (blown-in fiberglass), and Knauf Insulation Board (rigid panels). The quickest way to identify what you have is to check the kraft paper facing on batts – EcoBatt prints the R-value and batch code right on it. Blown-in is trickier, and that’s where most homeowners get it wrong: Jet Stream Ultra is a finer, denser glass fiber than standard Jet Stream, and re-topping with the wrong one changes your R-value per inch. Knauf rates EcoBatt from R-13 to R-49, and San Diego homes built before 1990 often sit at R-11 to R-19 – well under current code recommendations for our climate. For aftermarket, we’ve installed plenty of generic fiberglass that performs fine in a pinch, but we generally recommend staying with Knauf when you’re matching existing Knauf, because mixing fiberglass densities in one attic creates inconsistent thermal layers.
Signs Your Knauf Attic Insulation Is Failing
- Uneven room temperatures. One upstairs bedroom bakes in summer while the hallway stays tolerable. This usually means the insulation over that room has settled, compressed, or been displaced by an old roof repair.
- Energy bills climbing without a rate change. Knauf fiberglass loses effectiveness when it gets dirty or compacted. Dust fills the air pockets that do the insulating, and your AC works harder every year.
- Visible settling or gaps. Glance up in the attic: if the insulation sits 4 to 6 inches below the joists in spots, or there are bare patches around the eaves, you’ve lost meaningful R-value. Blown-in Knauf can settle 10 to 20 percent over 15 years in San Diego’s dry climate.
- Damp spots or a musty smell. Wet fiberglass does almost nothing. If a roof leak or bathroom exhaust vent has been blowing moisture into the attic, the Knauf batts or blown-in material in that zone need to come out, not just dry.
- Rodent or pest activity. Rats and mice love warm fiberglass. They tunnel through it, shred it for nests, and leave droppings throughout. That’s a removal-and-replace job, not an add-more-on-top job.
Replacement Cost & What’s Included
For a typical San Diego attic of 1,200 to 1,500 square feet, you’re looking at $2,200 to $3,800 to remove failed Knauf insulation and reinstall a proper R-38 or R-49 layer. Smaller jobs (a single-room re-blow or a patch after a leak) run $400 to $900. What drives the range: whether we’re removing old material (yes, it costs extra but it’s usually the right call), the R-value target, and whether your attic has tricky access or old wiring that needs to be worked around. Every quote from us is written before any work starts – no door-step surprises, no “we found something extra” markup. That’s the Kingswell Way, and it’s in writing on every job we do in San Diego. The installation itself carries a 365-day guarantee: if it’s not right within a year, we come back and fix it at no charge.
DIY or Call Us?
You can safely do a visual check: look for bare spots, black staining (that’s airflow dirt), or wet material. You can even measure the current depth with a tape measure to estimate your R-value before calling us. What we’d caution against is pulling up old Knauf batts yourself – that fiberglass gets brittle, and the dust is an irritant you don’t want in your lungs or on your skin without proper gear. Blown-in removal needs a commercial vacuum, not a shop vac. And re-topping over rodent-damaged insulation just seals the mess in. For the actual work, give us a call at (619) 344-8538 and we’ll get you an exact written number. You’ll know the price before any crew member shows up at your door.
FAQs
Knauf fiberglass itself can last 30 to 50 years, but in San Diego attics the effective lifespan is usually 15 to 25 years before settling, dust accumulation, or moisture takes enough of a toll that you’re losing real R-value. If you notice temperature swings upstairs, it’s worth a look. Call (619) 344-8538 and we’ll inspect it for free.
Partial failures – one wet corner after a leak, a bare patch over a bedroom – can usually be repaired by removing the damaged section and re-blowing or re-batting that area. Widespread settling, rodent damage, or mold means full removal and replacement is the honest recommendation. We’ll tell you which one you actually need.
Most San Diego homes are done in a single day. Removal plus re-installation on a 1,500-square-foot attic typically runs 6 to 8 hours with a two-person crew, including cleanup. Larger or harder-to-access attics may take a second morning.
Yes. We run Knauf EcoBatt and Jet Stream Ultra regularly, along with Owens Corning, Johns Manville, Rockwool, CertainTeed, Icynene, Demilec, GreenFiber, and Reflectix where the job calls for it. Knauf material is standard stock for us – not a special order, so you’re not left waiting a week.
